The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018

Before yesterday, the gastronomic event of the year took place at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao – the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” – which this year broke records in attendance according to its organizers. Thus, the city has been the world gastronomic capital for a few days, reason why there has been a great offer in culinary events besides the awards ceremony. In fact, this was the first edition held in the Basque capital, because traditionally the gala was held in London until 2016, when it moved to Melbourne in 2017 to start its world tour.

The winner of the awards ceremony was the restaurant Osteria Francescana (Módena, Italy), led by Massimo Bottura (Módena, 1962). As it has been tradition, the second place was El Celler de Can Roca (Girona, Spain) followed by Mirazur (Menton, France), Eleven Madison Park (New York, United States) and Gaggan (Bangkok, Thailand), thus closing the TOP 5 list this year.

The doubly awarded Italian chef – this is the second year in which La Osteria is number 1 – was touched by receiving the award: «This award is not just for me, it goes for all of us,» he said, referring to professionals in the sector: “Because together we are creating a community that can start a revolution in the world of food and beyond.»

The work of Massimo Bottura also stands out for his social activity. For it, he is a strong advocate of the need to avoid any food waste and make the most of the ingredients. In addition, he is the founder of the Food for Soul initiative, a non-profit organization that helps different communities fight against food waste, through social inclusion.

In the gala we had a tribute as a dedicatory to the figures of gastronomy that recently has gone, such as Paul Bocuse, Marchesi Guaitero or Anthony Bourdain. The last one died this June. The tribute was received with an exciting ovation from the public.
